INTERN - Information Technology and Website Management
The objective of the internship is to provide practical training to the intern and to support ITLD in its data gathering, management, reporting, and online content management obligations. During the internship, the intern will gain experience in the design, development and population of a database in Microsoft Access, front-end website development using Drupal 7, and in document management using Microsoft Office tools.
More specifically, ITLD is required to create a database in Microsoft Access, to include:
•Recording and categorising all ITLD event and TA activities, their topics, staff involved, section(s) of ITLD carrying out the activities, relevant partner organisations, dates, budget, funding requirements, outcomes and follow-up activities
•Tracking authorization requests, justifications, authorisations granted and not granted, costs and outcome reporting and follow-up activities
The main task for the internship is to create the database, including the following steps:
•Work with ITLD staff on the definition and specification of requirements for the database
•On the basis of agreed requirements, design, develop and implement the database
•Install security features eg access rights and user privileges
•Test the system and correct bugs
•Design interfaces for inputting data and generating reports into and from the database
•Migrate existing records from Microsoft Excel and Word
•Prepare of technical and user documentation
Other assignments during the internship include:
•Assist with front-end development of the UNCITRAL website using Drupal 7
•Process and/or catalogue existing technical assistance documents
•Other related duties as assigned
Demonstrates a keen interest in the field of information technology and data management, as well as in the work of the United Nations and UNCITRAL. Has good analytical and problem solving skills, and understanding of Microsoft Office-based software applications, general database concepts, and front-end website development.
Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Considers all those to whom services are provided to be 'clients' and seeks to see things from client's point of view.
Applicants for an internship must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in computer engineering, computer science or software engineering, or a related field of study;
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in computer engineering, computer science or software engineering, or a related field of study;
(c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation (OFFICIAL MATRICULATION PROOF IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION).
(d) Be literate in Microsoft Office and other standard software applications
(e) Strong communications skills are an advantage;
(f) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and of UNCITRAL; and
(g) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English, i.e., oral and written proficiency, is required for the internship. Knowledge of both working languages or of an additional official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) is an advantage.
